What does it feel like to be dyslexic?

Amazing!
People with dyslexia use the right side of their brain more than their left, this allows them to see every day activities from a different angle. For example, people with dyslexia are usually:

What does it feel like to be dyslexic?

Do you know somebody like this? I expect so, as one in ten of us in the UK have dyslexia.

Desperation to inspiration
There is, however, a down side to being dyslexic too. People with dyslexia may sometimes feel isolated, confused and frustrated – because they struggle with literacy.

Kerrie didn’t find out she was dyslexic until she was 30. Working within Human Resources, every day tasks like emails, writing letters and taking messages were a challenge. But being determined, as most dyslexics are, she taught herself coping mechanisms and was able to manage in most situations. But it wasn’t easy.

When a colleague approached Kerrie about spelling mistakes in an email she had sent, she began to question herself. She knew her written work wasn’t as good as it could be but she didn’t know what to do. After confiding in her husband, she decided to speak to her manager and was amazed with his reaction.

Luckily Kerrie’s employers were fully supportive and wanted to help. She was able to speak freely about the challenges she had faced and a system was already in place to help her. After several tests, Kerrie was diagnosed with dyslexia and has never been happier!

"When I found out, I wanted to shout at the top of my voice ...‘I have dyslexia!"

She wasn’t alone any more. She felt motivated and positive.

Since finding out she was dyslexic, Kerrie has been given all the help she needs to carry out her work to the highest standard.

“Nothing is a struggle any more. I was amazed at the amount of help that was available. I feel confident that I’m producing the best work possible and I have so much more time in the day!”

Take a leap, not a step
